3 Things That Cause Your Refrigerator To Be Noisy

A noisy refrigerator can be a nuisance if it's so loud it disturbs your sleep at night. A noisy refrigerator doesn't always indicate a serious problem, but it could mean your refrigerator needs repairs done as soon as possible. Here are three reasons why a refrigerator suddenly gets noisy and the refrigerator repairs that can help.

1. A Fan Is Malfunctioning

A scraping sound could indicate a problem with the fan blades. The fan motor can also get loud when it's going bad. The first step is to listen to determine where the sound is the loudest. The noise may be coming from the back of your refrigerator or the inside.

If it's coming from the back, it might be caused by the condenser fan. If it's coming from the inside, it might be the evaporator fan. A refrigerator repair technician can inspect the blade on the noisy fan to see if it's bent or has something stuck in it. If the blade is bad, it can be replaced with a new one.

If the fan motor is bad, the repair technician can pull the bad motor out and put a new one in to quiet the noise and make the fan work optimally.

2. The Compressor Is Going Bad

Compressor noises come from the back of your refrigerator. You probably hear a low hum every time the compressor kicks on to circulate refrigerant through the freezer and refrigerator. When the compressor starts to wear out, it can start humming loudly. This is an indication you should call a refrigerator repair company to have the compressor checked.

A bad compressor has to be replaced with a new one. Replacing the compressor is a job for a professional since it is a complex undertaking. A new compressor can be expensive, but refrigerator repair will still be less costly than buying a brand-new appliance.

3. The Refrigerator Shifted

If you bumped against the refrigerator hard enough, you may have shifted it a little. This might cause the refrigerator to vibrate against the countertop or plumbing line when the appliance kicks on. You may have knocked the appliance out of level, which could cause it to operate with more noise than usual.

Before you call a refrigerator repair company, use a level to check your refrigerator. If it's not level, adjust the feet until it is. Also, make sure the refrigerator isn't hitting anything when it turns on.

If you can't determine the reason for your noisy refrigerator, call a repair company for help. The noise might indicate your refrigerator is failing, and if it stops working completely, your food could be ruined.
